Ever hit send before you finished writing a message? Microsoft apparently did that today when they accidentally announced the release date for the upcoming ‘anniversary’ update to Windows 10—unless they change their mind.
- In a blog post today that included only a headline, Microsoft announced that the upcoming anniversary update to Windows 10 will be available on August 2nd. They’ve since removed the post. Was the announcement inaccurate, or did they just intend to announce the date at a later time (presumably with an accompanying blog post)? Only time will tell. But if you’re eager for updates, you can already try many of the new features with Windows Insider. [Microsoft via The Next Web]
- Microsoft has also changed the aggressive Windows 10 upgrade prompt that drew widespread ire for its confusing message that led some users to unwittingly install the update. The new prompt makes it easier to decline upgrade and closing the window will prevent it from installing in the background. I think you should upgrade anyway, but hey, you do you. [The Verge]
- Amazon Echo has a newly refreshed ‘app store’ that makes it easier to add functionality to the device. “Skills” are now organized into different categories that you can browse on a connected phone or tablet like you would browse app store. And you can now actually add skills just by speaking to Alexa if you know what to say (like “enable NBC News”). [TechCrunch]
- Car-sharing service Zipcar is experimenting with pay-per-mile pricing. Currently testing in Chicago, customers can rent a Honda Fit for $4.50 per hour + $0.50 per mile on weekdays. This is cheaper than their traditional pricing, which is based solely on time (at around $10/hour). [The Verge]
