Laura Polko didn’t come from star parents and she didn’t grow up in LA. Ten years ago she was attending an Aveda Institute in Ohio. Now she works with celebs like Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Tiegan, Justin Timberlake and Ashley Benson. !

This week, she did an interview with People where she summarized the measures that got her from Columbus to Calabasas:

Be aware of what your dream is, and what exactly you must give up to get it

Lauren says, “I always knew I needed to do hair through high school, and I kind of gave up caring about extremely anything else in school. But it was rough for my parents. I’m the earliest of three and my mother and father both had [multiple] degrees, so they didn’t comprehend the idea of bypassing school. My mother went around and got her hair cut in many different areas, as well as the young girls in various salons told her the same thing, like, “Yeah my parents made me go to school, I failed out the first year and so I wound up doing what I needed to do.” And she was like, “Oh my God.’”

The key here, is that it’s quite easy mistake someone else’s dream with your own. You must be callous of what you really love and drill down from impractically wide-ranging notions like ‘being a writer’ and ‘operating in style’. An excellent index is what you end up able to work the hardest at — that’s what you’re most inspired around.

Listen carefully to your gut when you feel ‘caught’

& #8220;I ended up going to Aveda. But I lived on Ohio State’s campus using a whole lot of pals, so I only stuck around and bartended and took my time determining what precisely what I was gonna do. I worked in a salon in Columbus for about a year along with a half and I did really really nicely; looking back on it, it’s extremely difficult to assemble a clientele actually quickly and I did a fantastic job doing it. But I kind of felt like, “Is this it? Is 19 gonna appear the same as 30?’”

Get out of Ohio

& #8220;I sold all my things, located a spot in N.Y.C. on Craigslist, and opened up Allure and applied to all of the salons in their salon and spa directory. I ended up getting work at Ted Gibson, and worked there for about a year as well as a half…”

Forfeit security for opening the right doors

& #8220;I was working as the hairstylist for Alloy and Saks catalogues for a long time, and I kept overlooking chances … Subsequently my photographer pal Miko came to me and was like, “I’m gonna shoot this girl tomorrow, and I would like you to do her hair.” So I leave my job and we shot Ashley Benson.”

Bear in mind that improvement isn’t blink of an eye

It took years of threats and insecurity to feel like she “made it” but Lauren recalls that every couple of years, you’re taking huge steps towards what you would like, and it adds up: “Doing Kim [Kardashian’s hair] is always something that everyone needs to do. So when that occurred, and then I got a call to do it again the following day, I was like S–t, this really is amazing. You sit back, you reevaluate and you’re like, These are all the things I’m thankful for, these are all the things I realized. Look at where I was a year ago, two years past — what’s the path that I’d like to go onto now? I found myself doing more celebrities and I’m like, “Okay, rad. This really is a great course. It is a totally adequate, awesome course that I’m so stoked to be on.” TC mark
