Please remember this is from the American Indian beliefs, but I hope y'all find it helpful or interesting
*******************************************************
An Animal Totem is an important symbol used by a person to get in touch with specific qualities found within an animal which the person needs, connects with, or feels a deep affinity toward. Sometimes an animal guide will come into your life for a short period of time, others will be with you for your entire life. Animal guides can help you get back to your Earthly roots, and reconnect with nature by reminding you that we are all interconnected.
********************************************************
Most tribes agree that there are four types of Animal Guides:
A Messenger Guide will come quickly into your life, then leave once the message is understood. The time a Message Guide stays with you depends upon you seeing and accepting the message. This message can be spiritual or it may be a warning. It may deal with a mundane aspect of your life or it may be a wake-up call. It may be a message about some important action you must make. Sometimes it may not be delivering a message, but causing a necessary delay in your life. Sometimes the animal messenger will come in thunder and make a powerful statement; at other times it may come on a breeze and only whisper. Animal Messengers are neither positive or negative, but are totally impartial.
A Shadow Animal Guide is one that infuses you with fear. Its purpose is to teach you a lesson you have not learned from repeated mistakes due to anger, greed, insecurity, or other negative thoughts. A Shadow Guide will come back again and again bringing strong feelings of fear until its message is acted upon or the proper change in actions or lifestyles are incorporated. The Shadow Animal is very powerful … it can help you overcome fear by bringing truth. If ignored, the Shadow Guide can become dangerous and its powers will have a negative affect on your life. This totem is almost always associated with a time of testing.
A Journey Animal Guide comes when there is a fork in the road in your life. When a decision is made to follow a certain path, the Journey Animal is there to act as a guide along the way. It represents a path that may take as few as a few months to complete, or may take years and is usually a friendly traveling companion. If you become lost along the way, the Journey Guide is there to help you find your way back. Unlike the Messenger Guide who comes and leaves quickly, the Journey Animal remains at your side until the pathway ends or once again forks.
A Life Animal Guide or Spirit Guide remains a part of you throughout life and reflects your inner spiritual self. You may have more than one Life Guide, and new ones may come during unexpected times. Usually a Life Animal does not move away or disappear, but remains a part of your life (though there are certain instances when a particular Life Animal is no longer needed and is replaced with a new one, though this is rare). The Life Guide’s powers are always there for you and serve as a constant reminder of your inner powers and oneness with nature. A Life Guide Animal will often call upon other animal guides to assist you from time to time.
The meaning and lessons an animal guide brings will be different according to the type of guide it may be. Learning to tell the difference between the four types of totems is necessary to knowing how to react and what actions you will need to take when an animal totem makes itself known to you. No matter what type of guide it is, all are powerful.
********************************************************
One thing to remember is that the Animal Spirits choose the person, not the other way around. You cannot think, “I love <animal> so I’m going to make it my totem. Instead the animal will choose you and make itself known to you when the time is right. You will only need to pay attention to discover what your totems/guides are. After you understand what type of Animal Guide has come to you, you then have to learn the nature of that animal … gaining insight into the nature of the animal (its habitat, life cycles, what it eats, society, physicality, mating habits, special skills) will help you to better understand its messages.
There are several exercises you can do to help you discover your totem animals. Patience while doing them will aid in drawing your animal totem to you or help you recognize the totems already with you.
> Ask yourself what animal has played a meaningful part in your world? If you're unsure, make a list of animals that have drawn your interest or have left a deep impression on you from paintings, photographs, stories, movies, carvings, etc.
> Which animal shows up in your life most frequently? Keep a journal of the animals present in your dreams or that you encounter through the day for the next month. How did the animal behave? Did you interact with the animal?
> Find a place where you can be alone to meditate. Sit quietly and ask your animal to make it's nature known to you. Feel free to use tools such as incense, smudge, and candles to help you.
Don't give up, sometimes your animal totem is nearby watching to see if you're serious about connecting with it. Keep doing the above exercises until your animal totem makes itself known to you.
Communication with your guides require respect and the knowledge of the ways of the animal guide (see above). You should find ways to honor your guides. The more importance you give to your guides the more they will respond to you. Most animal guides will not necessarily make themselves known to you immediately … they are leery just as the actual animal. The spirit guide is sensitive to your moods, current events, and path. They must first trust you and you must learn to trust them. It takes time, patience, and practice. But it is well worth the effort.
Some ways to honor and connect with your animal totems is
> Wear jewelry or clothing depicting your animal
> Use pictures or carvings, etc. in your room or home
> Visit the habitat of your spirit animal or the zoo or watch films
Pay attention to the messages of your spirit animals
> Spend time in meditation on your guide
> Give thanks to your guide for its assistance
> Understand that the message can be negative or positive
> Listen! Even when the message seems negative
Study the element most closely associated with your spirit guide.
Be open to any and all types of messages. Don’t get bound up by wishing for certain messages. Open your heart to the totems love and lessons.
However, if you wish to borrow the attributes of an animal spirit for a short period of time, this is acceptable as long as the guide is willing. Simply ask the animal totem if it is willing to lend you its spirit for whatever you need it for. _________________ "Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: if you're alive, it isn't."

I sometimes feel that these 'spirits', 'animal guides' or angels are actually evolved entities living in parallel dimensions concurrent with our own. They're actually in the here and now but they manifest themselves in a manner we can understand.
Maybe NASA is misguided looking for life forms out there. Maybe those lifeforms are here, just in a dimension below or above our own.
Provocative isn't it?
But admit it: its more efficient use of space. _________________ Nexus Contact Solutions is a US based corporation registered in 2003 primarily for the purpose of developing business opportunities in the world's fastest growing industries – business process outsourcing (BPO). I would like to know what place pets play in one's life. My dog died recently. He came to live with us under unusual circumstances. We or specifically I did not choose him. He showed up one day, and apparently decided that this was the place for him, and that he would be my dog. I am still deeply saddened by his passing, and can't bring myself to acquire another dog, and have rejected offers of dogs by well-meaning friends. He was very special, although I wasn't truly aware of it at the time. He came at a time that I needed him, that much I knew. I don't know why he left although I know the "how."
Was he supposed to be a guide, or "just" a pet? In this household no animal is ever "just" anything. Everyone teased me that he was my familiar because he was always with me.
Does any of your lore have a place for pets?

Here are some beliefs about Dog Totems:
DOG
Dogs have one of the best totems or spirit guides because they are well attuned to the nature of humans and understand the best ways to guide them. Throughout history the dog has been known as man's best friend. There are hundreds of varieties, sizes and shapes found on every continent. Certain breeds of dog are designed for specific functions.
===============================================
DOG MEDICINE
The dog is a protector and guardian. Their acute hearing and keen sight forewarned their masters of impending danger. They serve selflessly never asking for their service to be praised. They hold the energies of unconditional love and teach us its true meaning.
Domesticated dogs are faithful companions to humans and enjoys being useful by serving human friends. Their sense of spirit and the ability to love even when abused is incredible. The dog teaches those with this totem how to give and receive love unconditionally. It also carries the energy of forgiveness. People with dog medicine would do well in service oriented jobs.
Dogs are intelligent and sensitive. They are able to sniff out dangerous situations accurately and guide us into safety. Psychic gifts have long been are associated with the dog because of their ability to detect subtle energy frequencies often unknown to mankind. If dog suddenly appears in your life pay attention to your immediate surroundings and let the dog guide your footsteps.
Certain breeds of dog were designed for specific functions. The study of the breed and its purpose can help you define the energy associated with it. Since wolves and coyotes are its descendants these should be studied as well.
The behavior of a dog often reflects the personality of its owner. Through its observation and constant interaction with you it anticipates your next move, and serves as a mirror image of who you truly are. The dog is a great teacher for those who are willing to be loyal students. The choice is yours.
==============================================
IN GENERAL
A Dog totem is a great spirit booster
Dog energy is loyalty. It is through Dog that we learn to accept others as they are, and to serve others with no thought of self.

A psychic once told me she saw a very large white dog with me, in spirit form. She told me he was watching out for me.
She didn't know my parents used to own a very large white dog, named Azof, many years ago. I can barely remember him, since he died when I was like 3 years old. They told me he was very protective regarding me, especially when strange men were near. He used to let me ride on his back, not something that dogs usually do. I had forgotten all about it, but your post brings back the memory. |

Hi, Timmaniac. Since Cat is one of my totems I have a few things about it - LOL.
=============================================
CAT
Cats, both wild or domestic have certain qualities in common. They are associated with myth and lore, magic and mystery. Nine lives, curiosity, independence, cleverness, unpredictability and healing. Those with this medicine should also study its color, size and breed for a deeper understanding.
===============================================
CAT MEDICINE
Cats have more rods in the retinas of their eyes which enable them to see effectively in the dark. The dark is often associated with mankind's fears. Since the cat is at home in the dark, it serves as a valuable ally into the world of the supernatural and the unknown and can help those with this totem move through their fears efficiently.
The energy field of a cat rotates is a counterclockwise direction, the opposite of a human energy field. Because of this, cats have the ability to absorb and neutralize energy that affects humans in a negative way. This is part of the healing medicine that the cat holds.
If something affects you in a negative way place a cat on your lap or find a cat to pet. Your energy field will immediately realign itself and inner balance will be restored.
Because of their x-ray vision, acute hearing and high intelligence they were used throughout history as guardians and protectors.
Cat in your life means the blending of magic and mystery is at hand. A trustworthy teacher, the cat will guide you into the world of self discovery and transformation.
A cat totem encourages agility in both body and mind. You will be challenged with new ideas and places. The cat gives you clearer perception.
This spirit helper is resourceful, strong and fearless. It will give you courage and confidence.
==============================================
In General
Cats mean guardianship, detachment, sensuality, mystery, magic, and independence. Cat's medicine is independence, curiosity, many lives, cleverness, unpredictability, healing, the ability to fight when cornered, seeing the unseen, and protection. He also represents love and can assist us in meditation. If Cat is your one of your Totem Animals, then you have magic and mystery in your life. You are independent and a free thinker. You probably feel energized at night. You will stay with a person or situation until it bores you, and then you're gone. You have a great talent for organizing things. _________________ "Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: if you're alive, it isn't."

| I was wondering Moonwind, whether or not there is Lore concerning "imaginary" or fantasy creatures. Once again an orange dragon has made an appearance in my life. I know why, but not exactly sure why the dragon is so popular an avatar with me. Any thoughts? |

| Quote: | | I was wondering Moonwind, whether or not there is Lore concerning "imaginary" or fantasy creatures. Once again an orange dragon has made an appearance in my life. I know why, but not exactly sure why the dragon is so popular an avatar with me. Any thoughts? |
First I want to address Mel's interpretation to a question addressed to me ... all I can say is I feel sorry for someone so afraid as he seems to be. The Dragon is not a Snake and the Snake is not "evil" ... look at the symbol for medicine ... two snakes. I guess that makes medicine "evil". In fact, I think the Judeo-Christian-Islam religions are the only ones that see the snake as being "evil". Most other belief systems, including AmerInds see the snake in a positive light. But then again, most other belief systems allow for open minds, which seems to be sorely lacking in the Judeo-Christian-Islam religions.
=============================================
There are many "imaginary" and "fantasy" creatures among the lore.
Here's what I have on Dragons GT (and since one of my Totems is a Silver Dragon, I know the totem well). Oh and I also want to add that the color orange among my people means power and in conjunction with a Dragon I would say a powerful spiritual teacher. Beware, though, Dragons are strong task-masters! It "hurts" when they "spank" you!
A Dragon totem is one of the most powerful totems, representing a huge range of qualities, emotions, and traits. When Dragons come to us, it could mean many things.
The most common message a Dragon totem carry to us is a need for strength, courage, and fortitude. Dragons are also messengers of balance, and magic - encouraging us to tap into our psychic nature and see the world through the eyes of mystery and wonder.
More specifically, Dragons are the embodiment of primordial power - the ultimate ruler of all the elements. This is because the Dragon is the master of all the elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind. As a totem, the Dragon serves as a powerful guardian and guide. Encourage communication with your Dragon, and acknowledge your Dragon's presence as often as possible.
The Dragon represents prosperity. This may be of spiritual (intuition) rather than material riches, because the dragon was regarded as the guardian of treasure that lay hidden deep within the unconscious and was hard to obtain.
Following are some characteristics and virtues of the elemental Dragons: The Fire Dragon which represents leadership, inner fire, vitality and mastery. The Air Dragon which represents inspiration, vitality, intellect, respect, insight and illumination. The Water Dragon who’s virtues include, passion, depth, courage, ability to face the past without fear, and compassion, and the Earth Dragon which gives the power of realizing potential, acquiring riches, and grounding ones energy in order to harness it.
Dragons offer strong protection from evil, from all directions, North, South, East, West, Above, and Below. They have always been associated with metaphysics and alchemy. Magic, mystery and majesty are only a few of the Totem virtues of the mighty Dragon. All continents of the world have their own legends, myths and beliefs about the Dragon.
I hope this brings some enlightenment. _________________ "Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: if you're alive, it isn't."

| Oh yes Moonwind, a great deal of enlightenment. One of these days, I'll have to get around to telling you the extent. Thanks. |
