Apologies if it is totally inappropriate. But something I've been thinking about..

I recently realized that Comcast, though making claims of unlimited internet, has an upper cap of 250 Gig. If this is crossed, the user is warned and the next time such a limit is exceeded, service is discontinued. I had guests at my place last month and I almost got to 240 Gig.

A few years ago, I would've assumed 250 gig to be practically "unlimited". But that does not seem true any more. I stream music, Netflix to my TV, do some moderate amount of gaming, watch online HD videos, connect to work network through VPN and work via Remote Desktop etc. I guess some increased Netflix viewing caused the usage to bump up. Apparently, an hour of HD content streamed on Netflix takes 1.5 to 2 Gig of data.

So, in near future, 250 gig limit is probably not going to be all that sufficient. Or is it? My friends in Canada and Australia tell me they have caps at 30 to 90 Gig. Comparitively, 250 is better, I guess....

It's a set-up CPA. There is a huge push to implement devices that are "always connected" and always consuming bandwidth. I was reading article where one's entire 50 gig monthly allotment could be consumed in about 32 minutes if you made use of all services made available to you (like the ones you said you use).

Here in New York, Verizon has given me a 5gb monthly data limit for my phone and my tablet. I do my best not to use so called "tablet services" and sideload nearly everything Even though I paid for it unsubsidized, it isn't really mine.

The various carriers seem to think people are made of money, and will think it is wonderful that they always connected, right until that first bill comes. That will kill this whole idea of caps, high-speed media streaming, and everything else that puts large amounts of money into their pockets.
