Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of conducting a one-on-one training with a top manager at Wyeth.
He suffered people problems. People didn’t respect him. He was called names behind his back. Insubordination in his unit was rife. Someone even spiked his coffee with salt. The rock salt kind.  Black pepper thrown if for good measure.
Naturally, this raised eyebrows among the senior directors: if he couldn’t get his act straight, he’d be demoted, relocated, downsized, or thrown to some distant guerilla-infested outhouse. Truly a frightening prospect for a man at the tender age of 51.
Right away I saw what was wrong. The man was an ogre. Dripping with snot.

He cut my sentences to shreds with Samurai fervor. He avoided eye contact like I resembled Prince Charles on a bad hair day. He wagged his finger at me, like I was a mangy puppy. He monopolized conversations, saying “I am…” , “I want”, “I have….” so often that I almost believed he was an “Eye specialist”
He blustered how he demanded respect as a Boss but didn’t get any.
Now that was the core of his problem. He can throw titles all he wants but that cuts no dice with employees. Respect can never be demanded. It’s earned. Respect is not imposed. It’s worked for.
It was a long day….
